Colonoscopy Screening and Early Detection

Colorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States. Serving as both a diagnostic tool and preventative measure to safeguard your health, our colonoscopy screenings are your shield against cancer of the colon. We recommend patients without any risk factors to pursue their first colonoscopy screening at the age of 45. Patients with identified risk factors, including a family history of colon cancer, a history of inflammatory bowel disease, or a history of adenomatous polyps, should be screened earlier and more frequently.

Preventative and Diagnostic Colonoscopy Screening

Colonoscopy screenings are used to evaluate abnormalities within the colon, enabling our medical professionals to detect and remove cancerous or precancerous polyps. Furthermore, they can be used to source underlying symptoms of various gastrointestinal conditions, including hemorrhoids.

During the colonoscopy screening procedure, a long, flexible tube is inserted into the colon. The patient is given a light sedative to ensure maximum comfort throughout the procedure. Following the colonoscopy screening, we ask that our patients have a family member or friend to drive them home to ensure maximum safety as their medication wears off.

Hemorrhoid Treatment

More than 50% of the population is afflicted with hemorrhoids, but this health condition often goes unaddressed. While the signs and symptoms may come and go, it is best to treat the underlying source for lasting relief. As such, Tucson Gastroenterology Specialists provides non-surgical band ligation procedures that enable us to eliminate hemorrhoids with 99.1% efficiency. This virtually pain-free, out-patient procedure with complication rates lower than 0.5% requires no preparation or anesthesia, helping you achieve lasting results without compromise.

Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD)

Upper GI Endoscopy, also known as EGD is a procedure that involves inserting a flexible tube through the patient’s mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. EGD procedures are used to evaluate a range of gastrointestinal concerns, including difficulty or pain when swallowing, abdominal pain, and bleeding. Instruments may be passed through a channel in the endoscope during the procedure to obtain tissue samples, stop bleeding, or to dilate narrowed regions of the upper GI tract that may be contributing to the patient’s discomfort.

Video Capsule Endoscopy

At Tucson Gastroenterology Specialists, we offer cutting-edge video capsule endoscopy procedures to gain an exclusive understanding of our patients’ digestive systems. The video capsule endoscopy procedure is a minimally-invasive, interior imaging method that involves the patient swallowing the device in order for our professionals to evaluate the inner workings of hard-to-reach areas of the digestive tract to detect and treat a range of gastrointestinal conditions.

The video capsule endoscopy is a disposable, miniature video camera cased inside of a capsule complete with an optical system that includes a video chip, light source, transmitter, and energy source to secure direct imaging of the small intestine. The images taken through the recording are transmitted to a recording device worn around the patient’s waist. After eight hours, the data is downloaded to our computer workstation for review.

Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG)

We provide percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy procedure as a treatment for patients who cannot swallow safely. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is an inpatient procedure. During the procedure, an endoscope is used to precisely place a flexible feeding tube through the patient’s abdominal wall into the stomach. It is used for the administration of fluids, nutrition, and medications, ensuring patients with compromised means of ingestion still receive proper nutrients without posing a risk to their health and well-being.
